More than 16.000 kilometers of coastline,
More than 1.300 protected ecosystems,
More than 60 lakes,
More than 120 unique protected bird species,
More than 120 important underwater maritime archeological sites,
all of them endangered by the Bill relating to the coastline introduced by the Greek government. This Bill
– Allows big economic concerns to build on the sea shore and on the beaches
– Restricts the public’s right of free access to the coastline.
– Destroys the landscape, the natural environment and culture.
The landscape, the sea and the shores are inextricably linked to history. They are our joint property, the very heart of this country and a unique opportunity for sustainable growth with respect for the environment and for culture.
This is a known model of development. Wherever it was implemented, it destroyed the landscape, the shores were covered by concrete and tourism withered.
It is our duty to stop the destruction of unique landscapes, sensitive ecosystems and maritime archeological sites of international importance.
The Ministry of Finance is planning to bring the Bill to Parliament during the summer session despite objections, even from members of Parliament who support the government.
Already 150.000 citizens have signed asking that this Bill be withdrawn through the avaaz website and more than 125 scientific, environmental and social organizations.
This is an issue which affects ecosystems and cultural landscapes of international importance.
If this disaster is allowed to happen, the result will be irreversible.
For all these reasons,
We invite you to a Press Conference on Thursday 26 June 2014, 12:30 pm
at the offices of the Chamber for Environment and Sustainability,
Kallidromiou 30 str. ATHENS Tel: +30 210 3823 850.
