The Researchers’ Association of Hellenic Centre for Marine Reasearch letter for the withdrawal of the oncoming legislation for the Greek Coastal Zone

The Researchers’ Association of Hellenic Centre for Marine Research letter to the academic and research community of Europe.

Dear colleagues,

We hereby ask your attention, the academic and research community of Europe, in order to inform you about the legislation that the Greek Parliament is going to vote on the use of the Coastal Zone. In fact the Greek Government is about to put on a clearance sale large areas of the Greek Coastal Zone:

• ignoring the scientific knowledge on the multiple functions of the coastal zone,
• ignoring the high biodiversity and geo-diversity of coastal systems,
• ignoring the citizens’ right to access waters,
• ignoring any democratic process and decisions of local and regional stakeholders,
• ignoring the principles of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) that Europe developed in the last 20 years, through joint research programs,
• ignoring the principles of Marine Strategy and the Maritime Spatial Planning

All above are done under the pressure of the Credit Institutions.
